Written shortly after Michael learned of his mother's illness (c. early 1986)
The reprisal of "The Synthesizer" was, in essence, an accident left into the mix. From Michael's recording diary:
"i've been experimenting with endings to 'i was scared' demo. accidental tape splice planted bass track from 'dangers of the synthesizer' demo on to the end. i think i like it."
lyrics
Mom, why didn't you say you were going away?
Mom, I was scared
Mom, please don't leave
(and I see the dangers of the synthesizer)
